How To Make Ghee at Home
As ghee is such delicious and nutritious food, it’s probably time to start working it into your dishes! It’s always best to consider organic, grass-fed options, as they are typically more nutrient-dense than their grain-fed counterparts - but did you know that ghee is incredibly easy to make at home? Here’s our simple method.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (500g) of organic, grass-fed unsalted butter
Method

Using a sharp knife, cut the block of butter into small, one-inch cubes to increase the surface area.

Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Avoid stirring where possible.

When the butter has melted, allow it to simmer for 10-15 minutes until the solids have floated to the surface, forming a thick foam on top. It will spit a little, but when it starts to settle it’s a good indicator that it is ready. You can also gently push aside the foam on top to see if the curds on the bottom are golden in color.

Remove from the heat and strain into a glass jar. You will need something quite fine; I like a cheesecloth and sieve duo, but paper towels also work.

Allow to cool at room temperature until solid. Ghee will last up to 6 months on the shelf, or longer if refrigerated.
